Types of leader/ leadership styles
Remember to read the question here as you may get leadership styles and types of leader confused!
Types of Leader- here you must know the key terms and be able to describe them. It is also useful to be able to comment on the advantages and disadvantages of each type
Prescribed- Leader is appointed by external authority to lead group. Good as they have been appointed on their merit/expertise, Bad the group may not like them!
Emergent- Leader elected by the team. Good as team like and respect them, bad they may not be the best person for the job.
Styles of Leadership
Democratic- Leader consults with the group. The group allowed input which is good but it is only useful if you have lots of time.
Autocratic-Leader makes all the decisions. This is good when there is no time but not so good as it will impact on motivation of the group.
Lassiez Faire- This style means you do nothing! Only good with experienced groups.

fielder's model
The first model of leadership was suggested by Fielder. He suggested that certain types of leadership styles are more suitable to certain situations. The leadership styles he uses are Democratic (Relationship orientated) and Autocratic (Task Orientated). The situations he uses are Most Favourable, Moderately Favourable and Least Favourable.
You need to know characteristics of each situation and which leadership style is most suited to that situation.
Most Favourable Situations; Leader is respected by the group, teacher has a good relationship with the group, the group are highly motivated, the group are of a good ability, there is a good support network and you have good resources and facilities.
Least Favourable Situations; Leader may be new or not respected, the teacher has a poor relationship with the group, the group are not that motivated, there is no support network, you have poor facilities and equipment.

chelladurai's model
Chelladurai developed Fielders model and suggested that not only is the situation and the leadership style important, but he said the you need to consider the members/ groups characteristics (How they prefer to be led).
Required Behaviour - Determined by the situation (Rock climbing lesson would require a certain type of leadership style)
Preferred Behaviour- Performers (Group) ideal behaviour off the leader (Leadership style)
Actual Behaviour- Leaders attitude to the performer. (How the leader prefers to lead)
The closer the leaders behaviour is to that expected by the performer the greater the chance of success.
All three matching is the best situation.
