attribution theory & Learned Helpless ness
In this section you need to know:
– Weiner’s model and its application to sporting situations
– Link between attribution and task persistence
– Attribution retraining, self serving bias
– Learned helplessness, general and specific.

attribution theory
In this section you need to be able to identify aspects of the model
Locus of causality- How much control we have over the attribution (Internal/External)
Stability- How easily can we change that attribution (Stable/Unstable)
There are four ATTRIBUTIONS: Luck, Effort, Ability, Task difficulty
Attribution is a reason we give for winning or losing.
Successful performers attribute winning to internal stable factors (Ability- I won because I am good at sport) and losing to external unstable factors ( Luck- The referee was not on our side today).
Unsuccessful performers attribute losing to internal stable factors (Ability- I am rubbish at sport) and winning to external unstable factors (Luck- I was lucky to win)
Attributions can lead to our.....
Useful performers who attribute correctly have what is know as Self Serving Bias- this is attributing winning to internal
factors and losing to external factors. This protects their self esteem, makes us feel better about ourselves.
We can also link this to Achievement Motivation
nAch performer- attributes success internally and failure externally.
Naf performer attributes failure internally and success externally.

learned helplessness
A performer who attributes incorrectly may suffer from something called learned helplessness .
This is where the performer thinks that failure is inevitable even if success is possible.
Learned Helplessness can be global or specific;
Global- I am rubbish at all sports
Specific- I am rubbish at tennis
Question may ask you to define learned helplessness for 3 marks- if so you must include all of the above.
Reformative questions will ask how to help someone overcome the condition.
Common responses include;
Coach to enable player to achieve success/play weaker opposition/examples
Encourage view that success due to stable /internal factors – ability
That failure due to unstable/external factors – effort or luck/examples

attribution retraining
If someone suffers from Learned Helplessness they will need Attribution Retaining. This is getting them to attribute in the correct way so success internally and failure externally.
Other ways include (Reformative Question)
Other ways include (Reformative Question)
- Ensure success
- Highlight progression
- Individual Attention
- Task based goals
- Monitor attributions
- Avoid criticisms
