personality & Achievement motivation
Questions in this section are quite common as there is some much theory in it!
In this section you will need to know the following topics;
– Definition of personality
– Interactionalist perspective
– Personality as a predictor of performance
– Use of personality testing
– Profile of mood states (POMs)
– Achievement motivation – motives to achieve (Nach) and avoid failure (Naf), and the characteristics of each
– Incentive value and probability of success
– Development of approach and avoidance behaviour.

personality
In this section you will need to know a definition of personality and be able to discuss its effectiveness as a
predicator of performance.
Definition; “The sum total of an individuals characteristics which make him unique”
(Hollander).
You will need to be able to discuss the various theories of personality and how they may be used to predict sporting performance.
Trait Theory- Born with established characteristics/innate. Used to predict behaviour, you will act the same in all situations. B=F.
Social Learning Theory- Learn from copying a significant other. Observe-Identify-Reinforce-Copy. Your behaviour will change with the situation.
Interactionalist Theory- Combination of social and trait theories. Behaviour is based on inherent traits but will change with situation. B= (PE). Hollander Model- Psychological Core, Typical Response and Role Related Behaviour.
With regards to personality testing you will need to know the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods of testing personality. So this includes Self Report Questionnaires and Observations. In particular you will need to know about the Profile of Mood States Questionnaire. Learn the 6 mood states, and make sure you are able to explain the 'Iceberg' profile in terms of predicting an elite performer.
POMS
Elite performers show the Iceberg profile. High in Vigour low in Tension, Depression, Fatigue, Confusion, Anger. Non elite performers will flat line. If a successful performer flat lines its usually due to over training.

achievement motivation
Achievement Motivation is an aspect of personality. You need to be able to define what this is, and the characteristics of a performer with nAch and Naf characteristics. Reformative questions will ask how you as a coach can encourage nAch (Need to Achieve) behaviour or change a Naf (Need to Avoid Failure) performer to a nAch (Develop approach behaviour). Remember to use key words in your answer here- easy marks.
Attempts to link PERSONALITY and COMPETITIVENESS.
The extent to which an INDIVIDUAL IS MOTIVATED TO ATTAIN SUCCESS.
Achievement Motivation= Desire to succeed- Fear of failure
It is a combination of personality and evaluation of the situational factors.
Evaluation assesses two aspects:
1.Probability of success
2. Incentive value of the success

developing approach behaviour
How do you change a Naf to a nAch?
Why do you want a nAch?
•As a coach you want a player with a high level of achievement motivation.
•Reducing punishment and negative feelings
•Gradually increasing the task difficulty but ensuring challenging tasks still set
•Raising levels of self efficacy- avoiding learned helplessness
•Set goals that are achievable
•Re attribute
•Praise from significant other
•Encourage feelings of pride and satisfaction through success.
•Ensure that at least some situations guarantee early success and subsequently gradually increase task difficulty
in line with progress
