What do TIPs do?
•Develop elite and prospective elite performers
•Provide centres of excellence
•Hold major events
•Includes sport science and sports medicine support.
•Provides career education for athletes
•Develops high quality coaches
•Develops links with international organisations
•Promotes sport in other countries to improve participation.
•Distributes national lottery funding
•Promotes fairplay
•Controls doping
•Develops new technology for training and equipment
Advantages
•All potential performers screened/not left to luck to get spotted
•Individuals are directed to suitable sports
•Accelerated programme of development
•Good use of funding/resources
•More chance of producing winners/medallists
•Co-operation between organisations
Disadvantages
•May miss potential performers if they develop late
•Expensive/requires large amount of funding
•Large number need to be tested to be of use
•Does not guarantee success
•May be difficult to direct to correct sport
•Many sports in competition for same talent pool/high profile sports may attract more performers
