Effects of an audience on performance
Definition;- The influence of the presence of others on performance. Performing in front of other increases arousal. It is how the performer deals with this arousal that will affect performance.
Social Facilitation- Performance is enhanced by presence of audience
Social Inhibition- Performance is made worse by presence of audience
There are several key people/ groups of people involved in this theory you need to know;
Audience- People watching the vent (In stadium or at home)
Competitive Co-actors- People in direct competition with the performer
Co-actors- People performing the same task but not in competition with the performer.
Social Reinforcers- People that have a direct influence over the performer.
You need to be able to link the theory to the Drive Theory of arousal. As arousal increases so does dominant response
Elite (Autonomous) & Simple Skills- Enhances skill/performs better (Facilitation)
Non Elite (Cognitive) & Complex skills -Inhibits the skill/performs worse (Inhibition)
TOP TIP Exam Question...
Discuss the effect that the presence of an audience may have upon the level of performance for a novice and an elite performer.

evaluation apprehension
This topic needs to be linked into any extended question about effect of an audience, or it could be examined on its own in terms of having to provide a definition. ..
Influence on performance if they think they are being judged.
For example you would perform differently if it was just you mum watching you to if there was an England scout in the crowd selecting for the next England team.
It normally has a negative effect so Inhibition.

barons distraction conflict theory
Here you need to be able to explain the theory Baron proposed.
He said that the prefer needs to focus on the task in hand and any thing that's distracts them will hinder performance.
We can only process one piece of information at a time
Performer does the task required which has demands (need to focus on it) the audience may also act as a distraction causing conflict to the performer as to what to attend to. Causing information over load and increased arousal and therefore social facilitation effects.

Limiting the effects of Social inhibtion
The reformative part of this theory will ask you how you as a coach can limit the effects of an audience on a performer.
Common responses include;
Mental rehearsal, Train in front of others, Increase selective attention, Reduce the importance of the event, Avoid social comparisons with others, Team mates are supportive.

home field advantage
Click here to read about home advantage
Questions here may ask if a home field advantage will always increase performance?
YES
Home support improves performance
More matches won at home than away
Home teams are more attacking in their play
Proximity effect- negative on the visiting team
Larger crowd at home negative impact on visiting team
Visiting teams commit more fouls as over aroused
NO
Increased pressure on the home crowd
May lead to choking
More self conscious so increase in arousal
Players put more pressure on themselves
Social inhibition for the home team
Evaluation apprehension for the home team
